This component will implement integrated watershed management planning and addresses challenges of large-scale watershed degradation in northern Nigeria
Activities to be implemented under this component
This is aimed at developing integrated strategic watershed plans with appropriate analytical and stakeholder inputs. A strategic watershed plan includes a set of actions to manage the natural resources, as well as people’s actions and livelihoods in a catchment.
This is aimed at improving water storage capacity, this includes rehabilitation of existing small dams/reservoirs, rehabilitation, replacement of boreholes. Also, treatment of gully complexes with planned measures to mitigate erosion. The subcomponent will also improve information and extension services contributing to improved climate-smart sustainable agriculture (CSA) systems.
This subcomponent aims to restore activities in sensitive riparian habitats through putting in place buffer zone protection areas (preferably with native species), works to repair and stabilize riverbanks, removal of invasive species, and removal of debris in waterways, plans and studies, among other actions. “Riparian areas” refers to areas of land relating to wetlands adjacent to rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands.
